Reader Guide to the Awards Browser
This guide explains the controls in the awards browser. Use it when you want to narrow the table before sorting or downloading a CSV.
Genre Scope
Speculative fiction is the broad umbrella for stories that ask “what if?” through settings, technologies, magic, or other phenomena outside ordinary reality. It is not a peer genre beside science fiction and fantasy.
- Science Fiction
- Generally speculates through science, technology, space exploration, artificial intelligence, or future settings.
- Fantasy
- Generally speculates through magic, folklore, mythic realms, or supernatural forces outside ordinary physical laws.
- Other Speculative Forms
- Magical realism, supernatural horror, science fantasy, and other boundary-crossing forms can overlap science fiction or fantasy, but do not automatically belong to either genre.
Filters
- Genre
- Filters by award-recognition genre. Science Fiction shows books with science-fiction recognitions; Fantasy shows books with fantasy recognitions. This matches the CSV downloads.
- Awards
- Limits results to selected award categories, such as Hugo Novel, Nebula Novel, or Locus Science Fiction Novel.
- Subgenres
- Filters by book taxonomy, such as Space Opera, Dystopian SF, High Fantasy, or Urban Fantasy.
- Recognition
- Switches between all recognized books, winners only, or finalists and nominees.
- Award Years
- Uses the award year, not the book publication year.
- Reader Signal
- Filters by Goodreads average rating and ratings count. Higher ratings-count thresholds make rating comparisons more stable.
- Series
- Finds standalone books, first books in a series, later entries, or books where the series position is unknown.
Sorting
Recommended balances award recognition, wins, Goodreads rating, and ratings count. You can also sort directly by title, publication year, latest award year, recognition count, award wins, Goodreads rating, ratings count, subgenre, or series order.
CSV Downloads
The Science Fiction and Fantasy CSV files use the same award-recognition genre logic as the Genre filter. A crossover book can appear in both files when it has recognitions in both families.
Public Dataset and Downloads
A generated snapshot of award-recognized science fiction and fantasy novels, recognitions, reviewed Goodreads edition metadata, and controlled local subgenres. Award-recognition genres, work genres, and subgenre taxonomy are separate. It is not live Goodreads or SFADB data.

CSV files follow award-recognition genres; crossover works can appear in both. Reference-page books are selected examples, not complete query results. Use the interactive browser, MCP, or structured exports for exact lists.
Provenance: configured award sources and reviewed edition evidence maintained in local SQLite before export. Missing edition facts remain optional; local taxonomy is not raw Goodreads shelving.
Public access does not grant a new reuse license for third-party data or cover images. The software's MIT license does not license those materials.
